Discover Your Power Journal

Planting Seeds for Personal Growth

ROLE: Creative Direction

I built this 90+-page journal for She’s the First, a nonprofit in New York City dedicated to empowering girls and young women around the world. The journal content was created by their staff to facilitate personal growth for girls everywhere. Over the course of a few weeks, I developed the creative direction of the piece and executed the design from start to finish.

She’s the First came to me with the following requests for the journal design: “The words that come to mind are strong, spunky, and bold. Since it's geared towards high school aged girls, we'd like for it to be engaging and printer-friendly, but not overly youthful/feminine. We're looking for colors and fonts that are complementary to our brand color palette and guidelines.”

I got to work and created this journal with bright, bold colors and sharp lines. I used silhouettes of young girls of all ages, sizes, abilities, etc. so that girls could see themselves reflected in the journal and to add a more personal touch.

The Results

The final product has reached 150 organizations and 30K teen girls worldwide.

Lessons Learned

Follow your inspiration, even if it seems only distantly related. I used the styles of the early 90’s as my jumping off point for the colors and strong shapes, and softened it with the use of illustrations.
